Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Incident in the Vicinity of U.S. Consulate General Monterrey
Mexico City, October 16, 2008 - “I was informed that earlier today shots were fired in the vicinity of the U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey, just days after a security incident at our diplomatic mission there, and less than 24 hours after my fact-finding visit to that city.
“My highest priority is the security of our Embassy and Consulate community and those Mexicans who visit our facilities. I have made the decision to suspend visa services to the public for the rest of the day today while we assess the security situation. The Consulate in Monterrey will be re-scheduling those visa applicants who are affected by this temporary suspension of service.
"I want to thank Mexican authorities for their quick response to the Consulate after the report of shots fired near our building. We have great confidence in their ability to help us assess events and ensure the safety of our staff and clients. We will continue to work closely with our Mexican counterparts in the law enforcement investigation of these incidents so that those responsible can quickly be brought to justice.”
