Lost or Stolen Visa

What is considered a lost or stolen visa?

Any laser visa or machine readable visa issued after May 1998 must be reported as stolen or lost if it is no longer in your possession.

What action should I take?

  • File a police report as soon as you find that your visa is lost or stolen.  If you do not know when you lost it, you still need a police report filed in Mexico.
  • Send an e-mail to the Consulate (MonterreyVisas@state.gov) or a fax (52 81-8343-9399) as soon as possible to report the visa as lost or stolen.  Indicate the complete name, date of birth, visa number and expiration date, if known.  Indicate the circumstances of the loss and any actions taken to recover the document.  Attach the police report.  The fax must include a contact phone number and be signed by the visa holder.

What should I do to get a replacement visa?

  • Schedule an appointment through our scheduling service (CSC) http://www.usvisa-mexico.com.  You will not qualify for a renewal appointment as you no longer have your visa in your possession.
  • At the time you apply for a new visa, bring your original police report.  Come prepared with complete documentation demonstrating your ties to Mexico.   The consular officer will evaluate your case as a first time application, even if you have held a visa for a number of years.
  • Your passport must have an expiration date no less than 6 months from your interview date.  If you qualify for a visa, you will receive a visa pasted in your passport, not the laser visa card.

What is NOT considered a lost or stolen visa?

  • If an immigration officer canceled your visa at the port of entry (POE), for example, in McAllen, Laredo, Dallas, etc... it is not considered to be a lost or stolen visa.  You will not need a police report as the Consulate will receive direct notification from the Department of Homeland Security.

If your visa was issued before May 1998 and it is not in your possession, you do not need to file a police report stating it was lost or stolen.
