After Hurricane Alex’s wake of destruction in Monterrey and the state of Nuevo Leon, a group of American and Mexican Consulate employees banded together to collect relief supplies and funds to contribute to emergency relief and recovery efforts.  By July 12 the Consulate had collected significant funds to purchase relief supplies, and in addition many officers and staff contributed items such as water, food, and clothing.

ConGen Monterrey's Foreign Commercial Service Approached the local American Chamber of Commerce with an invitation to join our efforts, and the AmCham responded enthusiastically. AmCham staff came up with two vans full of supplies, including sorely needed air mattresses, blankets and other household items.

On July 13 the Acting Consul General, along with the AmCham Executive Director and volunteers from both the Consulate and the AmCham loaded the supplies into two Consulate trucks and delivered them to the Nuevo Leon DIF (the National Agency for Family Development, which is coordinating, measuring, and implementing relief).  On hand to receive the donation was Nuevo Leon first-lady Greta de Medina, who personally thanked the Consulate and AmCham for their dedication and volunteerism.

Increase of Non-Immigrant Visa Application Fees Effective June 4, 2010

The U.S. Department of State has announced a world-wide increase in the nonimmigrant visa application processing fee, also called the Machine-Readable Visa (MRV) fee, and Border Crossing Card (BCC) fee, effective June 4, 2010. The new rule also establishes a tiered structure with separate fees for different visa categories. Under the new fee structure, the charge for visa application fees will vary according to the type of visa requested.  In Mexico, this change will apply to Border Crossing Cards (commonly known as “Laser Visas”) as well as to non-immigrant visas.  Mexican minors will continue to pay a reduced fee; however this fee will increase from the current fee of US $13.00 to the new fee of US $14.00.

The Department of State is increasing the fee to ensure sufficient resources to cover the increasing cost of processing nonimmigrant visas (NIVs).  The new, tiered fee structure was created to cover the higher unit costs for processing certain categories of nonimmigrant visas that are more complicated and require more in-depth consideration than most other categories of nonimmigrant visas U.S. law requires the Department of State to attempt to recover the cost of processing non-immigrant visas through the collection of the application fees. Contemporary Musical Recital Outreach

In celebration of piano week at the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza in Monterrey, doctoral candidate Annalee Whitehead performed a rousing piano lecture recital of 20th century music which highlighted the different genres of piano music written since 1978.  Whitehead was one of three international guest artists featured.  Her recital featured many pieces by American composers including Samuel Adler, Daniel Pour and Frederic Rzewski.  Her performance was extremely well received by a packed house of students, faculty, and other members of the community.  Whitehead’s performance not only exposed the audience to new composers and music forms but served to cross cultural divides through the universal appreciation of music.
